The Plate Licked Clean: 2023 in review

On December 31, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Favourite Cardiff opening (aka the ‘Relieved it’s every bit as good as I wanted it to be’ award): Tukka Tuk Canteen, Poca Parallel appeared as confidently as you’d expect, but my heart belongs to two local favourites who opened long-awaited new restaurants this year. Anand George’s quiet revolution continued as, despite formidable hurdles, Tukka Tuk Read More

Wilson’s, Bristol: set lunch review

On May 5, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

How do you make a brilliant restaurant even better? Well, you do lunch for £25. You serve up five courses of remarkably poised, seductively accomplished cooking in laid-back style, and you do it with warmth. For £25, in case you missed it. Here on Chandos Road it has long been easy to eat well. Very Read More

COR, Bedminster, Bristol: review

On April 7, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Arriving in Bedminster early for my lunch at COR, I wander up and down North Street. I pass a launderette, a tattoo parlour, a boarded-up mini market: and yet someone has recently opened a bottle of Moet here, the gold foil and twist of wire on the tarmac. It’s an incongruous sight metres from the Read More

Marmo, Bristol: review

On July 14, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

This feels like the right place to be as you walk in, the air heady with good things which happen here, in this small but high-ceilinged room, and from that tiny kitchen which is essentially an extension of the bar. I sit t at the bar in those tall windows, the light courses in and Read More

Cotto Wine Bar and Kitchen, Bristol: review

On May 22, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘So- to the train station? Where is home..? You been in Bristol long? But you used to live here? Ha. You come for a woman, yes? You look like a man who likes a lot of women… Oh, just seeing friends this time..? You can’t fool me… it is good to schedule a holiday from Read More

Sonny Stores, Bristol: review

On May 7, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

There’s a little Community Notices board on the kitchen’s outside wall on Birch Road. This is where you come if you’re looking for a lost cat or guitar lessons- or the services of a ‘foot health practitioner’, if you’re in the market. More relevantly, you also come here for a menu which makes easy picking Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
