Goodbgr, Albany Road, Cardiff: review

On March 29, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Owners Waz and Taz are an engaging double act: they might sound like your children’s favourite TV presenters, but despite the affable welcome they are obviously serious about what Goodbgr does. Cardiff hospitality veterans with longstanding ties to the area- they went to primary school close by- theirs is a dyed in the wool local Read More

Chinese Fast Street Food, Charles St, Cardiff: review

On March 16, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

I’ll always have a soft spot for Charles St. I had one of the most romantic meals of my life there, one of those unplanned post-gig late-night styrofoam boxes of noodles under a starry sky, where she nestles her head into your chest and softly sighs and you’re both stupidly, uncomplicatedly happy as possibilities bloom. Hench Burger at The Royal Oak, Broadway, Cardiff: review

On March 13, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

The burger pub pop up has form in Cardiff. Got Beef followed Hang Fire into The Canadian not far from here, and if you were paying attention you’d have known that Ansh was the new best burger in the city while they were only serving out of their van at St Canna’s two and a Read More

Parallel by Pasture, High St, Cardiff: review

On March 11, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Here’s my Pasture hot take: the most interesting bits of their steakhouse menu are on the peripheries. Charcoal-roasted cabbage with bacon butter, caramel pork belly, the ubiquitous short rib croquettes with gochujang. Their small plates-only opening next door should bode well, then. It’s certainly an intriguing menu. Koobideh for example: a rarity outside Persian-run menus Read More

Kingdom of Sheba, Bute St, Cardiff: review

On March 6, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘Welcome, brother’ and ‘Anything else, brother?” are lovely ways to bookend a meal, aren’t they? You’ll find kingdom of Sheba- known to regulars as ‘Taste’- on Bute Street. To get there from the city centre means to experience one of the city’s most fascinating transitions. Stand at the staute of John Crichton-Stuart, Second Marquess of Bute, Read More

Mowlana, Adamsdown, Cardiff: 2023 revisit

On February 19, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

For those who pride themselves on the finer points of Cardiffian chicken arcana, Mowlana has long been a name to reckon with. The name, perhaps. Since 2013 in fact. Their delayed post-pandemic reopening (for refurbishment) brought more panicked update queries to my inbox than any other Cardiff restaurant. In short, it’s good to see it Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
