Picton & Co, Mermaid Quay, Cardiff: review

On July 20, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘The only Godfather line I know is ‘Say hello to my little friend,” she says. Clearly, today’s trip to Everyman Cinema is both educational and long overdue: and lunch will be here at Picton and Co, on the edge of Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. Historically the area has been a byword for slim pickings, Read More

Hatsu Udon, Grangetown, Cardiff: review

On July 19, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

It’s a warm evening, verging on sultry, in Grangetown as I arrive at Hatsu Udon: 26 degrees as I sit, and I’ve spent the day on one of Cardiff’s busiest street food stalls. Clearly, cold noodles are going to be A Good Thing. There are a dozen or so countertop seats overlooking the long galley Read More

Purple Poppadom, Canton, Cardiff: ‘Magnificent Seven’ tasting menu review

On July 16, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

This menu arrives just in time. It is a busy period for southern Indian food in Cardiff. Koottaan has made an encouraging start, and Little Kochi (reviewed here) has built on its recent listing in The Good Food Guide to expand with a standalone takeaway. Yards away from Purple Poppadom’s Canton base, Mum’s Daily has Read More

‘Twosday’ from Thomas by Tom Simmons, Pontcanna, Cardiff

On June 20, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

This ‘Twosday’ meal at Pontcanna’s Thomas was one of those ‘invitation’ things. It’s important you should know that. You’ll have your views on the authenticity of these things I’m sure, but transparency matters, doesn’t it? You should know I was asked to Thomas, and that I didn’t pay for anything we ate or drank. You Read More

The Fox at Penllyn, Cowbridge: pub menu review

On May 25, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

India’s Bhāskara II tried it in the mid-12th century. In the 1300s, Petrus Peregrinus of France had a go, too. For centuries, inventors have yearned to uncover the secret of the perpetual motion machine. ‘A wheel that could run forever’. Infinite work, infinite movement: a machine which never stops moving. It’s a shame they never Read More

QBAO Noodles Bao, Cathays, Cardiff: restaurant review

On April 28, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

QBAO, then. Cathays, Cardiff. I sit at the window and think, I see why I’ve seen this place called a ‘hidden gem’. To be fair, the signs are all there. There’s the location in Cardiff’s heavily populated student area, cunningly concealed on the junction of two streets with busy footfall. There’s the eye-catching two-tone lilac Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
