Humble At Home from The Humble Onion

On January 29, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

At some point over the last few years, Antonio Simone obviously sat down and thought about chips. Not in the way we all do in the odd lull, when you get that craving for the tang of salt and vinegar and the little puff of steam as you unwrap them because it’s cold and you Read More

La Marina, The Old Custom House, Penarth

On January 15, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘Goldilocks’ restaurants are rare enough and should be celebrated, so I’m amazed I haven’t written about this place until now. The Old Custom House has long been one of those rare places where you know everything will be ‘just right’. The welcome, the atmosphere, the surroundings, the service, the cooking. Just right. I’ve had many Read More

La Cuina, Pontcanna, Cardiff: 2020 review

On January 9, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Perhaps it’s the tucked-away location on Kings Road, but La Cuina is very much one of those ‘if you know, you know’ places: it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Founder Montserrat Prat has made nothing less than a cosy little Catalan-influenced nook in Pontcanna, one which does what it does consistently well. An obvious Read More

Milkwood, Pontcanna 2020 revisit

On January 7, 2021 by The Plate Licked Clean

Pandemic on the streets of Canton, pandemic on the streets of Riverside: but comfort food is here to help us through. Milkwood’s change of direction in response to 2020’s ApocaGeddon is not only admirable but has been more marked than most: so let’s celebrate one of our true beacons, because few locally have pirouetted as Read More

The inevitable ‘2020 end of year round up’ post

On December 31, 2020 by The Plate Licked Clean

This won’t be a Top 40 style rundown of favorite dishes in this oddest of years, or even my favourite restaurants. We all know what’s happened and the challenges that poses for restaurants and the people who work in them, so let’s skip to the good stuff. Instead, let’s highlight some good local food you Read More

Afrikana, City Road, Cardiff

On December 18, 2020 by The Plate Licked Clean

‘I always recommend this fried chicken and everyone loves it!’ says my server, in this, perhaps the least ‘City Road’ venue on City Road. You know what comes next, don’t you? A full-blooded, studs-first dismantling of the menu and the place. It’s a chain after all, and a rapidly-expanding one. That’s not the sort of Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
