Dusty Knuckle Pizza, Canton

On April 28, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

This, right here, is stone cold proof of the burgeoning street food culture in Cardiff. It’s a story of people backing their gut, their passion, and making things happen. That Dusty Knuckle have made the transition from popup to permanent in the courtyard of local brewers Crafty Devil, who themselves seem to have gone from Read More

Zi’s Café, Woodville Road, Cardiff

On April 17, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Zi’s Cafe is one of those places. Places which aren’t social media stars, places which are notable by their absence in the self-promotion stakes, but places which you hear praised and recommended far too often for that acclaim to be groundless. It shouldn’t have taken me this long to try it. Now next door to their Read More

BJ’s Burger & Juice Bar, Penarth Road, Cardiff

On April 10, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

You know that bit in that Simpsons episode ‘Lisa the Vegetarian’- the school information film ‘Meat and You, Partners in Freedom’, where actor Troy McClure* runs his finger along the spine of a cow, as you would the rim of a mixing bowl, then sucks it and pronounced it delicious? Yep, that’s basically me. So Read More

Time and Beef, Canton, Cardiff

On March 20, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

Yawn. Not another burger bar, goes the conventional wisdom, although no-one seems to mither on when there are twelve humdrum Indian restaurants and fourteen identikit Chinese takeaways in the same postcode, let alone the proliferation of pizzas. A new burger place seems to rouse the ire, somehow. A burger joint with a new angle is Read More

Science Cream, Castle Arcade, Cardiff

On March 10, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

I often wish I’d been better at Chemistry when I was in school. It was that combination of me not finding it easy to grasp, and a teacher who was so  knowledgeable in his cherished field that he found it hard to descend to my level. This all led to me viewing the subject with Read More

Hendrick’s ‘G’n’Tea’ at The Park Plaza, Cardiff

On February 26, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

I didn’t think I was going to like this. Quietly, afternoon tea has very much become A Thing recently and most hotels now have their own slice of a lucrative market. Not my kind of Thing, though: in my mind it’s musty and prissy. It’s dainty-for-the-sake-of-it, finicky food. It’s what my old Prof (he was Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
