591 by Anatoni’s, Canton, Cardiff: review

On March 7, 2024 by The Plate Licked Clean

I don’t have anything new to say about Victoria Park’s 591 by Anatoni’s. Don’t worry, though: no one else has, either. Local pizza reviews trudge a well-worn path. Almost 3 years ago, reviewing Scaramantica, Tony Frawley’s former place, they were already ‘…a well-worn route to Review Predictability via Cornicione Parkway and Airy Crust Central.’ But Read More

West Pizza, The Laundry Quarter, Pontcanna, Cardiff: review

On March 31, 2023 by The Plate Licked Clean

Pizza by the slice isn’t something that has caught on in Cardiff. RomEat does it very well, of course, and their Roman-leaning style is notable for its crisp olive oil-enriched base. Generally, the city is dominated by the Neapolitan style: small, soupy-centred, the rim buckshot-scorched with blisters, turning us all into pomodoro pundits and cornicione Read More

Fizz’n’Flour Pizza, Canton, Cardiff: review

On January 23, 2022 by The Plate Licked Clean

So here on the Canton Food Mile is Fizz’n’Flour, Cardiff’s latest pizza place. It’s another example of the locally dominant style, but there’s a lot to like: besides, this end of Canton was an absolute priority for good Neapolitan pizza.  By which I mean, it’s near the school run.  Fizz’n’Flour started as a lockdown project Read More

Dusty Knuckle Pizza, Canton

On April 28, 2016 by The Plate Licked Clean

This, right here, is stone cold proof of the burgeoning street food culture in Cardiff. It’s a story of people backing their gut, their passion, and making things happen. That Dusty Knuckle have made the transition from popup to permanent in the courtyard of local brewers Crafty Devil, who themselves seem to have gone from Read More

Calabrisella, Canton, Cardiff

On March 8, 2015 by The Plate Licked Clean

Anyone running the rule over Tripadvisor recently could be forgiven for thinking Italian food in Cardiff is enjoying something of a revival. Three of the top four slots are occupied thus: city centre favourite Cafe Citta at four, overtaken by recently reviewed- and very good- Il Pastificio on Wellfield Road. The runner-up for the entire Read More

Pizza Pronto, Penarth

On July 13, 2014 by The Plate Licked Clean

Old Monsieur Charles-Guillaume Etienne is apparently the man we have to thank for coining the maxim, On n’est jamais servi si bien que par soi-même. (Here he goes again, comes the collective groan) Bear with me. I mention M. Whatsisname because those words have come to us, not literally but certainly in spirit, as the adage: ‘If Read More

The Plate Licked Clean

This blog is a very simple thing.

I won’t try to sell you any hand lotion, exercise programmes, coffee syrups or Patagonian nose flutes.  You won’t find tips on dating, ‘wellness’ or yoga mats.

I write because I love it (and food, as indicated by my increasing girth). Greed happens to be my Deadly Sin of choice, but at least it is never shy of providing me with subject matter.

A simple thing, then: all you get is me wittering on semi-coherently about places I’ve eaten at; hence a ‘restaurant blog’ rather than a ‘food blog’, although there are a few recipes scattered throughout.

From mezze to Michelin ‘fine dining’ and all points in between.
